My first trip outside the country took me to Singapore and it turned out to be one of those experiences that stays with you in a good way. It started as a work-related trip, but along the way it became a mix of discovery, small surprises and moments that made me appreciate how different yet easy international travel can be.

I chose Singapore for a simple reason. It is known for being safe, clean, and very well organised. For a first international experience, it felt like the perfect place, somewhere smooth, welcoming and easy to navigate. Singapore really delivered on that.

First impressions that felt almost futuristic

From the moment I arrived at the airport, everything already felt different in a good way. Immigration was fast and smooth and the facial recognition system made the process feel very modern.

Changi Airport itself deserves the attention it gets. It is not just an airport, it feels like a destination. I went to Jewel and just spent time taking everything in. It was impressive how something so functional can also feel like a place you actually want to explore.

What stood out right away was how clean and organised everything was. The streets, public areas and transport systems were all well maintained. The city feels very disciplined but not in an intimidating way, more like everything just works.

The MRT subway system was one of the highlights for me. It is efficient, easy to use and very reliable. You can literally tap your card and move from one place to another without stress. Most places are also cashless, which makes things even more convenient.

A diverse country with helpful people

One thing I appreciated throughout the trip was how diverse Singapore is. You see different cultures, food, languages and communities all living together in one place. It gives the city a unique energy that feels both modern and multicultural at the same time.

Another thing that made the experience even better was the people. In my experience, Singaporeans were not rude. In fact, many of the locals we interacted with were helpful and polite. Whether it was asking for directions or getting assistance in public areas, people were willing to help without hesitation. Most people also speak English, which made communication much easier and made getting around the city more comfortable.

Key moments that made the trip memorable

There were a lot of places that really stood out during the trip.

Marina Bay Sands was unforgettable, especially at night when the light show begins. Seeing it during the day and at night gives you two completely different experiences. While you are in the area, you can also walk around and see famous spots up close like Merlion Park, the Helix Bridge, the Singapore River and City Hall.

Gardens by the Bay was another highlight, especially the evening light show. It felt calm but visually stunning at the same time.

We also spent time exploring Orchard Road, which is basically a shopping paradise. Then there was Bugis, where we went for souvenirs and even tried a fun photobooth experience at Haji Lane. We wandered around nearby areas too, including Little India, which gave a different cultural feel to the city.

One thing I really noticed is how many parks and green spaces Singapore has. The Singapore Botanic Gardens was perfect for slow walks and relaxing moments. Even the malls are huge, clean and well designed, so simply exploring them becomes part of the experience.

For something more exciting, Universal Studios Singapore added a fun and energetic part to the trip.

Food experiences worth remembering

Food was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

Eating at hawker centres was something I would highly recommend. It is casual, affordable and full of variety. It also gives you a real taste of local daily life.

Some of the things I tried included Kaya toast, Malatang, Hainanese chicken rice and Satay, among others. Every meal felt simple but satisfying and each one added something new to the experience.

Small surprises along the way

Of course, not everything is perfectly predictable when travelling.

Sudden rain showers happen and the humidity is something you definitely feel throughout the day. Dressing comfortably makes a big difference.

Walking is another thing to prepare for. Even with an efficient transport system, you still end up walking quite a lot, especially when exploring different areas. Comfortable shoes are a must.

Another thing I noticed was the cost of the country. Singapore is quite expensive overall, but the good thing is there are also many free attractions like parks, gardens and public spaces that balance things out.

Practical tips from my experience

From my experience, getting around Singapore is very easy. The MRT is your best friend, and Google Maps is extremely helpful for walking directions. For ride apps like Grab, it is good to have a bit of cash or a linked payment method ready.

Budget planning is important since expenses can add up quickly, so having extra allowance helps avoid stress during the trip.

Singapore turned out to be a very smooth, diverse and memorable first international experience. It is clean, efficient and full of places that are easy to explore even for first time travellers. More than anything, it gave me a better appreciation of how travel can feel both simple and exciting at the same time, especially in a place where different cultures, kind people and modern systems all come together.
